In 2013, Miley Cyrus faced a string of controversies. Her infamous VMA performance with Robin Thicke and “Wrecking Ball” video generated a great deal of negative publicity for her. Cyrus said these professional controversies impacted her private life. A number of people have mocked her for saying she “lost everything” during this time.

Miley Cyrus shared how the controversies in 2013 impacted her

Cyrus’ 2013 album Bangerz marked a sharp departure from her public image before then. She’d been a child star on Disney Channel, and she debuted her more raunchy, adult image. While the album was well received, Cyrus also faced considerable backlash during this time. Her performance at the VMAs with Thicke was widely ridiculed.

“That was the time where I just got hit so hard and I was so embarrassed,” she said on the podcast Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky.

She said her younger siblings were so embarrassed of her that they didn’t want people to know they were related. Her public image began to impact her private life.

“I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally,” she said. “If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn’t want to be with a woman [whose] sexual expression part was not for them. It was like shared with the world.”

Fans have mocked Miley Cyrus for her comments about the controversies

In a Reddit post that shared Cyrus’ comments, people did not sympathize with her. To many, it didn’t seem as though Cyrus, who is still a major celebrity, really lost everything.

“She lost ‘everything’? Well it seems like she definitely lost perspective,” wrote one person. “She’s always been far more privileged than most.”

“$160,000,000 net worth, massive career and celebrity status. ‘Losing everything’ is a bit of an exaggeration,” wrote another person.

In the post, Cyrus’ comments appear to be taken out of context. It referenced the footage that surfaced of Cyrus smoking a bong in 2010. She lost a Walmart deal after it leaked and faced public backlash.

She has since spoken about her love of marijuana

Three years after the footage leaked, Cyrus spoke about her love of marijuana. It once brought her controversy, but she seemed to embrace that.

“I think weed is the best drug on earth,” she told Rolling Stone. “One time I smoked a joint with peyote in it, and I saw a wolf howling at the moon. Hollywood is a coke town, but weed is so much better. And molly, too.”

She said she avoided drugs that didn’t make her feel social.

“Those are happy drugs – social drugs,” she said. “They make you want to be with friends. You’re out in the open. You’re not in a bathroom. I really don’t like coke. It’s so gross and so dark. It’s like what are you, from the Nineties? Ew.”
